Rotom chooses sustainable and reusable

The recent scarcity of wood has led to huge fluctuations in prices and availability. This scarcity, combined with making environmentally conscious decisions, has led to an intensified search for the sustainable option. With branches all over Europe, these kinds of choices by Rotom can have a nominal impact. An example of such a sustainable choice is the commissioning of a machine that places wood recycling at the heart of the production of our wooden pallets.

Sustainability is taking an increasingly central place in both society and business. As one of the larger pallet suppliers in Europe, Rotom is always looking for the sustainable alternative. This may be by choosing extra-sustainable wood that has been specially cultivated for the pallet industry, or by choosing raw materials or products that last longer. Another option is to choose a machine that can facilitate the processing of sustainable material even better. Rotom Portugal recently introduced and commissioned a machine that can make pallets from both new and used wood. An important step in making the chain more sustainable.

Where many machines have a very precise or small margin of error, it is valuable for machines that make pallets to be able to process wood that deviates slightly from the standard. After all, small imperfections can quickly lead to wood being written off. A shame, we think at Rotom. That's why we looked for a machine that could deal with wood that might have been written off if the margin of error had been smaller. In this way, wood is used that might previously have been shredded, for example, to make wood fibre for pallet blocks. Not a bad option in terms of sustainability either, but of course we want to extend the life span of wood as much as possible.

This machine from the supplier Cekamon is not the first purchase of our branch in Portugal that is aimed at using raw materials as efficiently as possible. Previously, a pallet saw, end-of-line saw and a pallet disassembly machine were purchased. Here too, reusability and sustainability were key. Together, all these purchases make it possible to process both used and non-standard timber into the elements that make up a pallet. This is how we at Rotom try to work towards the longest possible life cycle and the least possible waste.
