ISPM 15

ISPM 15

In the global standard ISPM 15 measures are defined to guarantee that live vermin do not travel via the wooden packaging. ISPM 15 describes the treatment of wooden packaging, so that any potential harmful organisms are killed. Wood used for the manufacture of wood packaging and dunnage must be treated and marked prior to international transport.

ISPM 15 indicates, amongst other things, which products must be treated, the permitted methods, and the way in which the markings must be applied to these products. Purchasers and users of wooden packaging are guaranteed problem-free global transport with ISPM 15.

ISPM 15 is not applied for cross-border movement within the European Union (incl. Switzerland). For European countries which are not members of the EU, the packaging wood and dunnage must conform to the requirements of ISPM 15 in order to be importable into an EU country.

Rotom has drying chambers in order to carry out heat treatments. The treatment of wood packaging and dunnage must only be done using a heat treatment such as Heat Treatment (HT): 56°C for 30 minutes. Fumigation using methyl bromide (MB) as an alternative treatment is not permitted as of 18th March 2010 within Europe, due to a ban on the usage of methyl bromide.

Import inspections for packaging wood

In the Netherlands, these requirements are transposed and processed in the SMHV Manual. In the SMHV Manual, national requirements, which your company must meet in order to register with the Stichting Markering Houten Verpakkingen (Marking Wood Packaging Foundation) are stated.
